IM Eligibility

ELIGIBILITY & PROTEST

GAME & ELIGIBILITY PROTEST: Teams may protest any rule misinterpretation during a game provided the team captain lodges the protest with the game official prior to resumption of play after the first dead ball. JUDGEMENT CALLS ARE NOT PROTESTABLE!

The game official and/or supervisor will make every attempt to rectify the protest at the time it occurs. If the protest cannot be resolved, the team must file a written protest by 4:00pm the following school day with the Assistant Director. The IM staff will review the protest and issue a ruling within 24 hours. The protest MAY NOT be appealed to a higher body. Eligibility protests must be made to the game official prior to the end of any contest or before the scorecard is turned in. The protesting party must identify the person in question to the supervisor before he/she departs the playing area. Once the game has officially ended, a team forfeits the right to file a protest that will impact the game in question. The IM staff may remove an illegal player at any time or forfeit a game without protest from a team.

FREE AGENTS: The IM staff will make an effort to assist students who are wishing to play on a team but may not have enough contacts on campus to form a team. Students may check at the IM office prior to the beginning of any sport and register as a free agent. Every effort will be made to put the free agent in contact with other students who need additional players. It is in the best interest of a student to attempt to find a team on his or her own time and effort.

FACILITIES: The IM program utilizes a variety of facilities for activities. All indoor activities are held at the HUSTON HUFFMAN CENTER. Participants must have proper identification in order to gain admittance to the facility. SPECTATORS AND GUESTS WISHING TO ENTER THE FACILITY MAY BE REQUIRED TO PRESENT PROPER STUDENT IDENTIFICATION AT ANY TIME!

Other Intramural Activities are held at various other locations on campus and around the city of Norman. Tennis is played at the Timberdale Tennis courts; swimming activities take place at the OU SWIM COMPLEX; and, the FUN RUN will begin at the OU Duck Pond.

EQUIPMENT CHECKOUT: Equipment for IM activities is generally available at the event site. Students involved in racquetball and tennis must provide their own racquets and ball. Practice equipment may be checked out at the HHC. Reservations for outdoor sports practice equipment should be made at least 24 hours in advance.

IM ELIGIBILITY

All students, undergraduate and graduate, who are regarded as regularly enrolled in credit courses for the current semester, are eligible to participate. Participants must have proper identification in order to participate in Intramural Sponsored events. Faculty and staff are only eligible to participate in the intramural sports listed in the Faculty/Staff Eligibilty section listed below. Regularly enrolled DOES NOT INCLUDE O.C.C.E. or any other extension programs. General eligibility rules apply to all programs. However; specific rules apply to Flag Football, Soccer, Basketball and Softball. A STUDENT MAY PLAY FOR ONE TEAM ONLY DURING A TEAM SPORT!! All students are responsible for determining their own eligibility. The IM staff may grant special permission on eligibility request. FRESHMAN ELIGIBILITY: All freshmen that live in University housing MUST play on a University Residence Hall team. You may not change teams during any one season. FRESHMAN PLEDGES MAY play together as a Pledge Team but must play in the Residence Hall League (Women's play may differ). Pledges living in Greek Housing may play with either the member or the Pledge team if approved by the IM staff. Freshmen living outside University Housing MUST play with an OPEN TEAM or request special permission from the staff to play for a housing or pledge team. Freshmen pledges initiated during the academic year do not become eligible to participate on a member team until the following year. Freshman associated with orgnizations may petition to play in the open league with group.

U
PPERCLASS RESIDENTIAL HALL: An upper-class student living in a Residence Hall may play on any Independent, Residence Hall or Greek team with which they are affiliated. They may change teams from sport to sport but not during any one season.

GREEK ELIGIBILITY: Students must be regarded as active members of a social fraternity or sorority by their governing bodies in order to be eligible to compete in the Greek Division. A Greek student may also play for an Independent team or with another Greek team if his/her house does not have a team. Upper-class pledges may participate with the member team or request special permission from the staff to participate with the pledge team. A pledge's name must be on file in the IFC or Panhellenic office at least two weeks prior to the beginning of the IM season he/ she intends to participate. Sororities may enter teams that consist of only pledges and members. NOTE: Only teams made entirely of pledges can compete for pledge points.

ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY: No present OU varsity athlete may participate in the IM sport most closely related to his/ her sport. No team shall have more than two (2) varsity athletes or FORMER varsity athletes on the same team in any sport. Former Varsity players shall be under this restriction no more than three (3) years or the number of years in competition after completing their eligibility. A varsity athlete is any student whose name is on or has been on the roster of any Varsity team during an academic year. (Check with the IM staff for help in this matter.) The Intramural program does not consider students who have participated in intramurals, freshman teams, b-teams, or junior college teams as being varsity athletes. Any student who participated as a "walk-on" on any varsity team must clear their eligibility with the IM staff. Students who are admitted to the University under special NCAA guidelines may be subject to the IM Varsity athlete rules and MUST be cleared by the IM staff. CLUB TEAM ELIGIBILITY: Club team members may play the IM sport closely related to their club team, but IM teams may only have 2 club team members on the same team. PROFESSIONAL ELIGIBILITY: Any OU student who has ever engaged in or is under contract to a professional team MUST be cleared prior to participation.

INJURY PREVENTION

Players are encouraged to arrive early at an event site in order to have enough time to adequately stretch and warm up. Participants are encouraged to seek assistance from the Goddard Health Center regarding information on conditioning and injury prevention. In order to protect all participants, the IM staff reserves the right to remove and/or restrict any individual from any contest when, in their professional opinion, continued participation might cause harm to themselves or other participants. In the event that blood born pathogens are present, the individual shall automatically be removed from the contest until the injury is treated and no further contamination is present. Contaminated clothing must be removed if it is deemed to be a hazard.

INSURANCE: As a comprehensive state University, the University of Oklahoma offers a variety of Intramural sports programs to students.

Some of these physical activities are more strenuous than others, and since participation in the program is on a volunteer basis, the University of Oklahoma does not accept responsibility for injuries sustained while participating in Intramural contests or in the general recreation program.

E
ach student should have a thorough periodic physical examination before participation in Intramural sports. This is the students responsibility and while the University cannot compel routine, comprehensive physical examinations as a condition for participation, it strongly recommends that each participant do so on a voluntary basis.

Because of applicable state law, the University as a public corporate body does not have liability insurance to protect participants in the Intramural or general recreation program. As a constitutional state agency, the University is protected against tort liability for its governmental actions. Thus, participants are urged to have adequate health insurance to protect against unforeseen accidents and misfortune, which could seriously delay or even destroy a student's academic career. Goddard Health Center have options for student insurance. Contact Goddard @ 325-4611.
