Thank you for bringing the lack of hot water to our attention. Physical Plant was contacted immediately upon receipt of your email this morning. Once again, thank you for bringing this to our attention.
I can't find what the "nominal" fee for a guest is anywhere on the site!
The nominal fee for a guest is $5 plus tax. All guests must be accompanied by a current Huston Huffman student, faculty, staff, or alumni member. The member must remain with the guest during the duration of their workout.
It is completely ridiculous that the doors of the facilities are locked at 11:30 p.m. I tried to get into the Huffman at 11:30 p.m. on a Tursday night, and found the doors to be locked. The hours posted are from 6 a.m. - 12 a.m., I expect to be able to be allowed to enter the facility at 11:30 p.m. I do not feel like I pay to be locked out 30 minutes before closing time. Also if kickoff is 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Huffman is not open. But if kickoff is at 7 p.m. it is open? This doesn't make sense to me, especially since kickoff is in the evening. The center was open last year when kickoff was at 5:30 p.m. I feel like operations are getting worse.
First, we are thankful that you made a commentabout the doors being locked on Thursday evening at 11:30 p.m. That is not our operating procedure and we will look into it immediately.
Second, our staff struggles on game days when we are open as resources are limited. Recreational Services must rely heavily on student employees. The hours we were open for the 7 p.m. kick-off were a test to see what issues/concerns the staff had working that day. Due to the challenge of that day as well as from previous games, the decision was made to close the facility on the 5:30 p.m. kick-off date since activities on campus were starting as early as 2:30 p.m. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Can you guys be open later than 8 p.m. on Saturdays?
This is an excellent question. We determine open and closing times by turnstile and facility counts of the number of participants in the center each hour. On Saturday, facility counts begin to decline around 7 p.m. indicating to us the need for an early closing. We will continue to monitor the counts throughout the year to provide the optimal hours for maximum member participation.
I love going to the "Huff" to workout! Unfurtunately, I don't have an ipod or any other mp3 player. Instead, I try to watch the tv's they have while I'm on the treadmill...but, it's awful because the closed captioning is always messed up. Please look into that! Thanks!
Thank you for pointing this out. We checked the closed caption out and discovered that background music on VH1 and MTV cause the the caption to jumble. We have changed the stations to alternative viewing in hopes that will provide a better viewing and entertainment option.
I am a prospective student who is trying to check out what sport clubs are available on campus. I must say your sport club weblink is the worst I have seen among all colleges that I have looked at. It doesn't have links to any sports clubs; in fact, it doesn't even show a list of clubs. I also can't find the general student organizations webpage anywhere on the OU website.
The University of Oklahoma hosts a Sports Club Council. The Sports Club Council is different than most Universities as sports clubs must apply to be involved. The application for the Sports Club Council helps to promote safety and true Sooner spirit in sporting events. The Sports Club Council is a new organization and is operated by students with support from the university. Current Sports Club Council members include: Oklahoma Hockey, Oklahom Crew Team, Adaptive Sports Club Wheelchair Basketball, Oklahoma Club Lacrosse, Water Ski and Wakeboard Team
To be considered a Sports Club Council member, organizations must first be a registered student organization through the Student Life office. It is important to recognize each sporting club as a registered student organization because each is involved in their community as well as their sport.
For more information about individual student organizations as well as some Sport Club Council members, please visit http://www.cfsl.ou.edu/ and http://cfsl.ou.edu/SOindex.htm to learn more.
I love intramural sports just as much as the next guy, but my classes seem to always interfer with game times. I was just wondering with all the money OU has, why we are the only Big 12 school without lighting for our intramural fields. I think that this would increase the number of active participants that want to play.
Intramural Sports is always looking for ways to include more students. In fact, outdoor lighting has been a priority . Unfortunately, the bid we received last December to pull the amount of power that is needed to the fields and to purchase the equipment was well over $300,000 . At this point in time, Recreational Services does not have the money in its budget. If/When that money becomes available, lighting the fields will be a priority.
I'd like to see the employees at the Huff better enforce the rule about cleaning your equipment when finished using it. I've had to towel down quite a few slimy machines before sitting in them, and then I really don't want to use the towel on myself!
We do understand your concern and the student staff try to educate members to wipe down equipment after use; in addition we have installed Sanitizer Towelette Stations throughout the facility that hopefully encourage members to wipe down the equipment after each use.
During school semesters can the gym open at 5 a.m. like most gyms so people that work at 8 a.m. can get a good workout in before starting their day? Please!
Currently we do not have the budget to open at 5 a.m. however, we are open until midnight during the school semester due to student requests.
How do I sign up for personal training? What does personal training at the Huffman entail?
You can sign up for a personal trainer at the front desk of the Huston Huffman Center. You will be asked to fill out a request form and pay the training fee at the time the request is made. A personal trainer will be matched with you and the personal trainer will contact you to arrange workout times that fit your schedule.
Personal training sessions last an hour per session and can include an initial assesment, designed workouts, you decide how many workouts you wish to purchase and how often you wish to workout with a personal trainer. The personal trainer will develop a workout program designed for you and your specific needs and goals.
Are the staff on hand to teach us how to use the weight room equipment? I don't want to take a whole class on it . I just want to know how to lift weights without hurting myself.
The Huston Huffman staff can show you how the weight room equipment works. However, they cannot recommend exercises or prescribe exercises. We suggest that if you do not want to take the Weight Lifting Class through the Health, Exercise and Sport Sciences Department that you consider a personal trainer. Personal trainers can design a workout program and help instruct you on proper lifting techniques. Information about personal trainers is available at the Huston Huffman front desk.
Last year you had a variety of punching bags out and available for use in the cardio room. Being a martial arts practioner I loved using these bags. But when I went to use them at the beginning of the school year this year, they had been replaced by other equipment. When I left I saw thirty of them sitting in a class room not even being use. Could you maybe put one or two of them out for those of us who do not wish to take the class, or do not have the money to? Or maybe open the room for a couple of hours in the morning so we could put the dormant bags to good use. I just think with such a big gym, we should be able to have bags. Thank you.
The bags in the classroom are used for the group fitness classes for cardio kickboxing. Unfortunately, these bags are not meant to take a full kicks and hits that the heavy bag could handle. The bags and other group fitness equipment are only to be used under the supervison of group fitness instructors. The department has worked very hard to offer group fitness classes at a nominal price to the student body to make it affordable to all students.
Any thoughts about creating a women only room? I know a lot of girls that avoid the Huff because if its reputation as a "meat-market" scene.
We hope that this is an old rumor and not a current one. The design of the new facility provided for a weight room on the "bridge area" which provides for a different atmosphere. The center also has a state of the art cardiovascular room with 70+ pieces of cardio equipment including new treadmill and treadclimbers with individual T.V.s. We provide over 40 group fitness (aerobic) classes in a week. The new facility is bright, colorful, user friendly, and most important welcoming. We are here for all students and like to hear what you have to say. When the next phase is ready to be built, we encourage all students to be involved in the design phase and the focus groups.
I am a grad student and I don't have a parking permit so I have to come there everyday after 9 p.m. Can't you guys make the parking free (only for the people who come for their workout) by any chance or other means by taking our ID cards or something?
Parking is controlled by the Parking and Transportation office. Free parking is available at the Lloyd Noble Center. A bus regularly shuttles students to and from main campus. For more information about this option, please contact Parking and Transportation at http://www.ou.edu/parking.
I am very frustrated that group fitness classes keep getting canceled because of some rule that at least 5 people need to be there for a class to be held. I would understand canceling if the classes were free, but they are not. It is very frustrating to have to waste precious workout time waiting for other people to show up for a class, then have it canceled.
Group Fitness classes are typically planned for multiple participants and do not lend themselves as a class to one participant. For this reason, the Huston Huffman Center will hold class for two or more participants. At the instructor's discretion, class may take place if one person attends class. If you have any questions about this policy, please contact Khari Huff at 325-3053 or

I enjoy the group fitness program (though I don't like that my fees don't already cover its cost). But the schedule is so complicated that I have to strategize to get to the classes I want every week. All I want is a step class 5 days a week at the same time each day. Considering how popular step is, this shouldn't be a problem. It is impossible to maintain a different work schedule every day just to go to group fitness classes at different times.
I understand the frustration with not having the same class at the same time everyday. However a lot of the schedule depends on the availability of the instructors that we have on staff, along with what types of classes they are comfortable teaching. We try to offer classes at the same time everyday however they may not all be the same style of class. As a Certified Personal Trainer I also think doing the same activity every day can be monotonous. It is good for you to do different types of activity so that you don't develop any overuse injuries from doing the same thing over and over.
